Torch Relay

The Olympic Torch relay is one of the ancient sacred symbols of the Olympic Games. The torch relay begins in Olympia Greece at a lighting ceremony, it has a short journey through Greece where it arrives in Athens to be handed over to a representative from the host country. The torch is then transported to the host Country..

The XXI Olympic Winter Games Torch Relay was the longest Olympic Torch Relay in Olympic History. The Flame travlled 45,000 kilometers across Canada, starting in BC's Capital City, Victoria on October 30, 2009. Throughout the next 106 days the torch travelled through 1,036 communities through all provinces and territories to arrive at BC Place in Vancouver on February 12, 2010. During the opening ceremony the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, from the Olympic Torch was a signal of the beginning of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games! 12,000 Torchbearers will be involved in the Torch Relay

The Olympic Flame burns as a symbol of peace, brotherhood and friendship.

The Olympic Flag

The official flag features five interlocking rinks. The rings colors are blue, yellow, black, green and red on a white background. The Flag represents the five continents of the world, united by Olympism, while the six colours of the flag along with the white background represent all nations. The five interlocking rings represent the union of the five continents and the meeting of the athletes of the world at the Olympic Game.

Creator of the Flag, Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin (born January 1, 1863, Paris, France died September 2, 1937, Geneva, Switzerland), an educator, historian and sportsman, revived the Olympic Games in 1896 and designed the Olympic flag in 1913-1914.

The Olympic Flag was used for the first time in the 7th Olympiad in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920. It is paraded during the opening ceremony of each Game. At the end of the Games, the Olympic Flag is presented to the next host city by the Games host city.

During the opening ceremonies of each Olympic Games, the flag is paraded into the stadium, hoisted up the flag pole, where is must remain for the entire duration of the games. The lowering of the flag during the closing ceremony signals the end of the Olympics. The Olympic Anthem is played during the raising of the flag in the opening ceremony and when lowering of the Olympic Flag at the closing ceremony. The mayor of the host city of the Games passes the Flag to the mayor of the next host city. The Flag remains in the city hall of the next host city for the next 4 years. Currently the Olympic Flag is on display at the Vancouver City Hall.

Olympic Motto

The motto of the Olympic Games is Citius—Altius—Fortius, which is Latin for "faster, higher, stronger."

The motto encourages the athletes to give their best during competition - focus on bettering one's achievements, rather than on coming in first.

Olympic Creed:
The most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight ;
the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well
